Designers do…
October 28, 2009
There are countless sciences that influence design. These sciences and their theories don’t limit design’s applications, but expand them. Design is focused on creating meaningful relationships, and the more knowledge designers acquire about their subjects and environment the better they do their job. Psychology, sociology, biology, and many others have direct influence upon design. It would be difficult for a designer to create a poster without some basic understanding of how a person learns; or to create a social network without knowledge of human interaction. It would be near impossible to create an ergonomic chair without studying the body. While a designer may not be an expert in the particular science necessary, a designer’s openness and collaborative abilities allow for he/she to find the expert(s), acquire the necessary knowledge, and work together to construct a collective resolution.
It’s the job of a designer to ask the right questions to correctly define the scope of a task, and collect the right resources in order develop effective solutions.
